The Althar and the Baldachin - St.Peter's Basilica - www.visit-vaticancity.com

The Altar and the Baldachin. Over the course of the centuries, three altars were placed over the original “memorial” to Peter. The last one, consecrated by Clement VIII in 1594, is a block of marble from Nerva’s Forum. The gilt bronze baldachin, which is 29 meters high not including the cross, is the work of Bernini, who finished it in 1633.
